Objectives

  • Recognize the clinical features of dementia as a terminal illness and identify when hospice referral is appropriate
  • Become familiar with current research that reports variation in quality of care for persons with advanced dementia
  • Understand the stressors of the growing number of family caregivers
  • Identify the components of "attuned communication" and understand how it impacts physiological balance for patient
  • Understand the neurobiology of compassion
  • Understand that caregiver health and wellness impact patient care
  • Explain how recent developments in the tri-county area are creating national change in the health care industry
  • Become familiar with wellness/relaxation techniques such as guided imagery and yoga
  • Describe common impressions of people toward death and dying in America
  • Examine the breadth of choices and interdisciplinary services at end-of-life
  • Identify the physical, emotional and spiritual stresses of dying on the individual and family

5.0* / 5.5** Contact Hour Credits /CEUs for social workers**, case managers*, nursing home administrators* (applications approved) and nurses*(applications pending).

Contact Hour / Continuing Medical Education credits are available for Social Work, Case Management, Nursing Home Administration and Nursing* professionals who attend the entire presentation and complete an evaluation of the Handle With Care program. The program is geared toward the health care community, is open to the public and is appropriate for all practice levels (*application pending approval).

This program is approved (#011410-00) by the Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative for 5.5 CE Clock Hours. Jewish Family Service of Metropolitan Detroit is an approved provider of social work continuing education (#1130) by the ASWB ACE. (This program has been identified as being related to substance abuse. MCBAP will award contact hours.)

The Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). 5.0 Continuing Medical Education Units approved (cert. #CM2154-A200).

The Michigan Board of Nursing Home Administrators has approved the program for 5 credit hours (Approval #489100016).

Seasons Hospice is an approved provider of continuing education for nursing professionals.
